Nor-West Regional Special Services is seeking adults with developmental disabilities for a pilot program that incorporates elements of Community Habilitation. Community Habilitation is an OPWDD (NYS Office for People With Developmental Disabilities) service that supports an individual’s preferences for community participation, whether through pre-vocational activities, volunteerism, community service, recreation or other related activities. Our pilot program would initially operate three afternoons per week (M W F) from noon to 5:00pm beginning July 2012-June 2014.A typical afternoon may begin with volunteering at a community service organization, followed by job-skill acquisition activities, and conclude with a game of tennis, billiards, or jewelry-crafts.Nearly all of the activities will occur in the local community. Nor-West will offer round-trip transportation from central stops, and possibly home pick-ups for certain individuals. The weekly program fee (excluding transportation) will be approximately $ 36.00. Please note you do not need to be enrolled in Medicaid to enroll in our initial pilot program.
This pilot would initially be funded for two years through the C.D.B.G. (Community Development Block Grant) program. We hope to clearly demonstrate our ability to operate a successful Community Habilitation program to OPWDD, and then request their funding to expand our pilot to a M-F full day program in the summer of 2014.
If you are interested, please complete the enclosed needs survey and return it to the Nor-West office. If you have questions please call 737-4797. Thank you.
Sincerely, Christopher J. Morabito, MPA, CTRS Director
